Artist's Comments

This is Yan Lin, Hay Lin's paternal grandmother, and the former Guardian of Air. Yan Lin is perhaps the easiest character out of the five former Guardians for me to draw. I had a lot of fun doing her Guardian outfit. I had to look back at issue 19 of W.i.t.c.h. to visualize the details of her original outfit and certainly not the one designed in the animated series.
Sorry, I messed up a little bit on 16 yr old Yan Lin's face. ;P I really don't know what Chinese's fashion were like in the 1950's...so I gave Yan Lin the Chinese outfit that I saw Hay Lin found in one of the W.i.t.c.h. comic special! (W.i.t.c.h. On Stage comic special, part 7.)
I had to color Yan Lin's skin pigment lighter and more yellow to make her look more Chinese, (because most Asian people, like me, have yellow skin color.) The symbol behind her is the symbol of Air used in the W.i.t.c.h. comic series.
Yan Lin's name is the "Y" in team C.h.y.k.n. She was the former Guardian of Air before passing the role onto her granddaughter, Hay Lin. After Nerissa killed Cassidy, the Oracle passed the Heart of Kandrakar to Yan Lin. She kept it until it was passed onto Will. Yan Lin is the only former Guardian who still remain loyal to Kandrakar and became a member of the Council of Congregation after her "death" in issue 2. She continues to serve Kandrakar and guide her granddaughter and her friends through many wars against evil.

Her face looks fine, except for the nose. It needs to be placed a tiny bit closer to the mouth, and the highlight isn't placed right, you had it better in the guardian form. Also, the ears a little bit too high. They are in light with the tip of the nose.
another thing is both of heir right feet. you made the legs a little too short. If you're turning one of them to the front you have to remember that the ankles will still be aligned. It's the front-viewed foot that seems longer.

You know what's kind of freaky? I've *just* finished reading the 7th part of the special before I noticed this ^^' Good job I like it..

I've been meaning to ask this, but why the decision to make it be the 1950s?

I know that was the time for them in the Cartoon, but I'm not sure for the Comic.

Then again I don't think they ever gave a time limit for the Comic either did they?

I'm pretty sure though I remember reading that Guardians have a long life span right? Or am I miss remembering there?
:icongalistar07water:
The reason LoopyLor and I've decided the 1950's is because we've estimated around that time of period, is when the former Guardians were somewhere in their mid-teen years. No, in the comic, they never specify the year, but we've estimated in the 21st century for the WITCH girls...so that means that 50 years ago was when CHYKN was still alive and kinking. ;P
Yes, Guardians seemed to be immortal, although they don't have eternal youth. After Yan Lin's "death" on Earth, she lives forever in Kandrakar.

Thanks for the feedback, that way, I can improve later on in the comic. I'm still an amateur, though, so of course not all of them are perfect! ;P
And yes, I got Yan Lin's Chinese outfit from that part because I ran out of ideas! ;P

:iconroguecole:
But they could have a very long life span and stay young for a long time thoguh right?

I do understand though doing the 1950s as they never gave a time in the Comic, so this way you at least have somethign to work with
:icongalistar07water:
I don't know...it's quite confusing really. I supposed the reason that they don't have eternal youth along with immortality is because it makes them feel more...human.

:iconroguecole:
Maybe, but it does make things a little easier doing it the way your doing it.

Doing it the other way could come up with a lot of difficulties, so it's something I htink you would need to plan a lot more if you did it that way
:icongalistar07water:
And the reason that both of her right feet are shorter is because I planned them to be lifted. If they were truly on the ground, I would've drawn them longer. She's raising them slightly a bit up. That's why we're seeing the top of her shoe and not the front. ;P
