Description

Happy Lunar New Year, people. This year is the Year of the Dragon (my year) so as a tribute, I drew Xin Jing and the Four Dragons from Disney Italia's W.I.T.C.H. comic issue #09.

The Legend of Xin Jing and the Four Dragons published by the Walt Disney Company Italia was based from an actual Chinese mythology.
:bulletpink: Xin Jing, Nymph of the Elements
:bulletblue: The Red Dragon of Water
:bulletorange: The Pearl Dragon of Fire
:bulletgreen: The Yellow Dragon of Earth
:bulletpurple: The Black Dragon of Air
新年快樂 means "Happy New Year!"
龍 means "Dragon"

The sky...time was young, then. There was no rivers or lakes...just the great Eastern Sea. The dragons chased each other from the air. The bravest were the Red Dragon, the Yellow Dragon, the Black Dragon, and the Pearl Dragon.
Yet, one sad year, a prayer rose up...
"Help us, mighty Ancestors!" cried the voices of the people as they offered their prayers to the heaven with their sweet-smelling incenses.
Carried upward by the smoke from the incense...
The Yellow Dragon, the one who loved the Earth the most, went down to see what was going on.
"May the skies open!" cried the people. "May the rain return to bless our fields! This we beg for! This we hope for!"
"Poor mortals!" cried the Yellow Dragon. "The great drought is destroying their crops!"
"Their food is running out, and soon it will be the end for them!" the Red Dragon agreed.
The Yellow Dragon shed a tear. "Their suffering is great."
"Let us go seek help from the might Jade Emperor!" The Red Dragon suggested as he looked on.
With these words, the Red Dragon and his friends flew off toward the Heavenly Palace where the Jade Emperor lived...
...Yet the welcome they received was far from kind.
"Why have you come here to disturb me instead of staying up among the clouds?!" demanded the Jade Emperor, barely glancing their ways.
The Red Dragon stepped forward before the mighty ruler of heaven. "The people are suffering greatly, Your Majesty!" he pleaded. "If you do not send rain immediately, it will be the end of them! They will all die."
The Jade Emperor raised up a hand to silence the creature. "I will see to it," he said. "Now be off, and make better use of your time."
Thus spoke the Jade Emperor.
Ten days passed after the Jade Emperor made his promise. The people were ten days without rain. The women had nothing with which to nourish their children. Some ate tree barks, some ate roots. Some people said, "Help us, oh, great spirits of the heaven!"
And the Red Dragon decided to help them after the Jade Emperor did nothing and it was he who figured out how.
"The Sea!" He cried. "All the water we could want is there! And with that water, we could help those people." He turned to his fellow dragons and said, "We just have to scoop it up in our mouths and spray it into the sky over their fields. It will turn into rain and fall on to the crops."
And that's what the Four Dragons did hundreds and hundreds of times. The people couldn't believe their eyes as they cried with joy. "Rain! Rain!"
But the Jade Emperor wasn't pleased with their actions. In fact, he was outraged. "Arrest them and bring them here! Immediately!"
The dragons were taken to the palace in chains. The Emperor had prepared a terrible punishment for them.
"You have challenge my power, and for this you will be punished!" said the Jade Emperor. He turned to one of the spirits and said to him, "Here is my order to the Mountain Spirit who WILL obey me..." he turned and looked at the Four Dragons in the eyes. "Lock these dragons up in four separate mountains. Make sure they will never be able to leave!"
The Red Dragon looked up at his ruler and protested, "But we only did what was right!"
But the Jade Emperor had no pity for the dragons, and his order was carried out.
"Your order has been obeyed, Your Majesty!" said the Mountain Spirit after locking them up.
"This is what happens to those who rouse my anger!" declared the Emperor. "Now they will never be able to do good, ever again!"
But the nymph Xin Jing, a woman of courage, was angered by the Jade Emperor's action. A woman whose name means "Heart of Crystal" and was the Nymph of the Elements spoke and her words were very severe.
"Your cruelty is equaled only by your arrogance!" She spat in disgust.
The Emperor laughed, unmoved by her words. "And your beauty is, as always, unsurpassable."
Furiously, the nymph stood her ground and declared, "Your vengeance will be your own punishment!" Pointing to the four mountains, she said, "Look well at those mountains, because you will never see them like this, ever again!"
"What do you mean to do?" The Emperor asked. "You can do nothing to revoke my sentence."
And the Jade Emperor was right. The nymph couldn't undo his injustice. But she wanted the brave dragons' sacrifice to be remembered for eternity. Summoning all that she could, Xin Jing's power glowed. Her power passed through the mountains, releasing her magic into them...and in return, she absorbed their dragon essence and took on her new dragon-liked form.
And so, the Nymph Xin Jing, forever bound to the dragons, rose up over the world and the Four Dragons turned into four rivers: the Black River, the Yellow River, the Red River, and the Pearl River. The most important rivers in China...
...And all that was left of the nymph was a crystal amulet which contained the essence of the Four Dragons as well as her own...

...And so begin the legend that tells us the origin of the Guardians' power. The Crystal amulet became known as the Heart of Kandrakar, wielded by the Keeper of the Heart and the leader of the Guardians; the Red Dragon loved water; Pearl Dragon controlled Fire, the Yellow Dragon loved the Earth and the Black Dragon flew the best...and Xin Jing, the Nymph of the Elements, made their transformations possible...
